Beyond the Walls at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota
Located in southwest South Dakota, Pine Ridge is a one of the largest Native American reservations in the country. It is the site of several tragic historic events including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29, 1890. It is also the current day residence of many wonderful Native Americans with a proud heritage and strong culture.
Poverty has been a long-time issue for them however, with one of the lowest per capita incomes in the US. Unemployment is nearly 80% and infant mortality is 5 times the national rate. Teenage suicide rate on the Pine Ridge Reservation is 4X the U.S. national average for this age group. The infant mortality rate is the highest on this continent and is about 300% higher than the U.S. national average. The only country in the western hemisphere with a higher infant mortality is Haiti.
Beyond the Walls has partnered with the Oglala Re-Creation and Worship Center, and other local non-profit organizations to provide housing repair and maintenance, construction of a substance abuse rehabilitation center, and support for local youth programs. Beyond the Walls also conducts baseball clinics as recreational program for the children.
