This year, Beyond the Walls will send its third team to the Pine Ridge Native American Reservation in South Dakota. The reservation, larger than the state of Delaware, is home to approximately 40,000 Lakota Native Americans.
Economic realities are bleak:
- 80% of residents are unemployed.
- 49% of residents live below the federal poverty line.
- The infant mortality rate if five times the rate of the US national average.
Life expectancy of the reservation is the lowest anywhere in the western hemisphere, except for Haiti. A recent study found the life expectancy for men to be 48 years, and for women it is 52 years.
Through our partnership with the Oglala Re-Creation and Worship Center, our holistic approach addresses physical, relational and spiritual needs. Projects include sponsorship and support of youth programs, education, and spiritual mentoring to the youth of Pine Ridge. In addition, volunteers conduct various home repair projects, baseball clinics, and provide for the physical needs of the families. Beyond the Walls is also assisting with the construction of the “Hand of Faith” substance abuse rehabilitation center in White Clay, Nebraska.
